In the upcoming novel “10 Days of My Life”, Jarlath asks Shina what is the most important of the five senses to her. She gave him an honest answer and Jarlath then goes on to say that to him Sight and Hearing were the most important.

In the book Jarlath explains why he would rather lose Smelling and Taste over Sight and Hearing attesting to his obvious love for the beauty of nature and life itself. Sometimes, we may be trapped in a situation where we feel that death is the ultimate answer. That’s why suicide rates have been on the rise in the recent years. Stress and expectations drive us down to the road of self-destruction.

Why is the book, “10 Days of My Life” a timely novel? We live in an age where conformity seems to be the order of the day and many of us get caught up in our lives that we truly lose meaning of what it is about. In many ways, we are like the story’s main character Shina who consciously is happy with her life having attained wealth and fame. It took an odd man like Jarlath to make her realize that there is more to life than what society terms as “bliss”.

As we move along in the story, Shina feels a void in her life despite all the best things money could buy. That’s a classic concept but it never grows old. Many of us may experience the superficial joy that material things may offer but little do we know that joy is often temporary and fades away.

The only thing that would satisfy us is the meaning that life really has to offer. It helps us dispel the fear of the “what ifs” we will ask when we grow older. If we truly live a life full of meaning and without the fear of regret we will ultimately leave this world fully contented with the way we have lived.

A question many people ask when they hear of “10 Days of My Life” is whether this is just another sappy old love story? Although I am not to divulge the exact story here but I can honestly say that it is far from being a sappy love story! The story is more about self discovery and seeing life through a different perspective.

In the book, Jarlath never professes any form of love for Shina and acted more like an over bearing teacher who seemed annoyed at her idiosyncrasies. Shina is a bright woman although she tends to be naive and loves to jump to conclusions. Although Jarlath seems to have a short temper, you will actually see that he is very patient with her and ensures that they end every session with a moral learned.

They had some endearing moments where Jarlath does reveal a softer and more benevolent side to him but this possibly wasn;t enough for Shine to look at him differently. The story may remind you of the “Beauty and the Beast” but the question you may be asking now is; does Shina eventually fall for him?

In the book “10 Days of My Life”, Jarlath is the assigned “therapist” to help Shina get through her alcohol dependency. He is depicted in the story as a man literally concealing his true self under a black cloak, mask and voice changer. This at first freaks Shina out. However, there was something about him that seems to contradict his dismal appearance.

In Latin, Jarlath means “Man of Power”. Although the black guise does seem intimidating (and weird according to Shina), the story eventually will reveal the necessity to hide his true self from Shina. Jarlath has been described as being eccentric, enigmatic and mysterious (among other descriptions Shina had of him) but as the story progresses, we all learn more about him and his background.

However, in essence the focus of the story is not on how many days Shina was sentenced to stay in the estate but on the lessons she learned in 10 days that eventually impacted her life. Honestly speaking, 10 days is never enough to learn about the things we need to get through in life. But I imagine Shina would never trade those 10 days for anything else.

Shina Neville knew she had everything in life; a great music career, a fancy beach house, beautiful sports car and all the money she could ever wish for.
